It was a profound moment when I parted from the things I had collected from family and friends over the last forty-plus years - all of my beautiful keepsakes. The Lord's voice was clear, but could I truly let go? The real question was, would I be willing to give them up? Could I find the strength to be obedient and trust the Lord?
As the children of Israel headed to the Promised Land, they had to cross the Jordan River, which was flooded way over its banks at the time. It seemed like a task beyond their ability. In the same way, giving away most of my cherished possessions seemed more than I could do. But the Lord had a plan for both scenarios.
Consider the faith and obedience of the Israelites. They were instructed to put the Ark of the Covenant, a symbol of God's presence, in the front. As soon as the feet of the priests carrying the Ark touched the water, the flood waters would part. They didn't hesitate, they obeyed. And in that act of faith, a miracle unfolded. This is the power of obedience in faith.
Reflecting on my own journey, I can see the exact sequence of events. When I realized that all my precious belongings were not truly mine, but belonged to the Lord, I surrendered to His will. As I chose to trust in the Lord and His grace, I received more than I could have imagined. The joy I experienced in sharing my cherished things with precious friends was unexpected, but it was a joy that came after obedience.
In both stories, God revealed His will, and action was required. Many Bible stories illustrate this truth: the man with the withered hand had to stretch it out before it was healed, the fish and the bread had to be given away before they were multiplied, and Peter had to step out of the boat before he could walk on the water.
What is God leading you to do? Maybe He is speaking to you about teaching Sunday school, singing in a choir, or joining a church or small group. Perhaps He is leading you to sing or write. Whatever it might be, don't start analyzing your abilities or talents. Please don't come at it from a negative point of view. Step out and start. Trust Him to show you the way or open the doors that are needed. That part is up to Him. Your part is to move forward in faith. You will be surprised by what the Lord will do when you trust Him and obey.
"Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths" (Proverbs 3:5-6).
This is so spot on, my friend.
